We’ve always had Border Collies around our house. I got my first BC when I was five years old. We’ve raised them as puppies and brought them to our family as older dogs. When our first rescued dog, Darby, was about 15 years old and having seizures, we decided to adopt another BC to keep our 7 year old female, Shonagh, company.

In 2004 we approached MABCR and were amazed at the application process. I was really glad that adopters were so thoroughly checked out. We passed and were allowed to adopt McDuff, a large male BC who was being fostered outside Baltimore. McDuff was somewhat underweight and was brought to MABCR as a stray.

We say McDuff hit the dog lottery. He definitely likes the finer things in life. He is large for a BC at 72 lbs. and about 4 lbs. overweight according to our vet. He thinks he’s a lapdog and tries to lie on your lap each time you sit on the sofa. If he can’t lie on your lap, he’s smack dab next to you with at least part of him on you.

When it was time for Darby to visit the Rainbow Bridge, we were down to two BCs. Our female developed heart problems at age 9 and through great care and love she lived to be 13 years young. About six months before Shonagh went to be with Darby, we contacted Sarah about adopting a female BC. This time the application process was a bit simpler since we had adopted before. Sarah contacted us about a dog she felt would fit right into our family, a male named Laddie. While we were hoping for a female, we were really looking for another family member and made arrangements to visit Laddie at his foster home outside Harrisburg. Laddie had been abandoned at a Veterinarian’s Office in West Virginia before he landed with MABCR. He was afraid of our pool and refused to go near, but one day after a visit from a Reiki Master, he just jumped in and started swimming.
We’re so glad MABCR saved these guys and all the other BCs that have needed help. Thanks for what you do!
