The Fearing-Lowder Medical Fund

Edna Jarman Fearing. That name won't mean much to 98% of the Have You Herd readers. But it's a very important name to one of our volunteers. Edna Jarman Fearing is Brooke Lowder's Grandmother. Seventy-nine years old, born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Edna Jarman Fearing has made a lasting impression on her Granddaughter Brooke.

Edna has a zest for living found in few people, although perhaps found in more people in her generation: The Greatest Generation. Perhaps it's something about living through the Great Depression, perhaps it comes from within and we all have the ability but many of us lack the know-how. I digress, Edna always had something to do, somewhere to go, and a plan in mind. Now, as Edna battles Alzheimer's Disease, she still shows her true colors, caring for her Poodle mix, playing with her grandchildren, and traveling.

A lifetime of giving back to society has shaped three generations of women. Edna has made her lasting impression through volunteering for the Humane Society of Winter Haven (Florida), raising beautiful, goodnatured German Shepherd Dogs and Poodles and volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Edna's daughter (Brooke's Mother) is also very active in the community and of course, currently has a lovely rescue dog from her local shelter. Additionally, Brooke's Mother and Father have set up a foundation to make charitable donations in the Birmingham, Alabama area. Proving the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, Brooke has made a lasting impression through her work with MABCR. All three women are active, caring people who strive to give back to the communities they love. Brooke has told me she only hopes she can live up to her Grandmother's example. Brooke fondly recollects riding with her Grandmother as they delivered Meals on Wheels: certainly an event that can impact a young woman.

To honor her Grandmother's lasting legacy of caring about and working for animals, Brooke has generously donated $5000.00 to MABCR. This donation has been used to establish the Fearing-Lowder Fund. Occasionally, MABCR accepts a special needs dog that requires expensive surgery, and that puts MABCR in an awkward position. Should Spinner or Cate suffer or not be given a chance simply because we don't have $1500 for FHO surgery? Should we turn down that lovely-tempered male simply because he is heartworm positive? Thanks to the Fearing-Lowder Fund, we at MABCR have a little more flexibility. Of course, when an FHO surgery costs $1500 that money can disappear pretty quickly.
