This morning I got an e-mail that frustrated me. For me, buying or adopting an animal (of any kind) implies that a human is willing and able to take responsibility for that animal, the same as one would when having a child.
In an attempt to share my experience, I have collected some of the requests I get. This collection is ONLY from the first 10 months of 2008.
Below, you will see actual quotes from e-mails sent to me from people requesting that we take their dogs into rescue.
I'm having to get rid of one of my BC's. Would you be interested in finding him a home? He is 6yrs old, pure bred, no papers, blk & wht rough, 100% obedience trained. He is not working out in my new apt. He is being sneaky about lifting his leg inside.... other than that he's great!
need to find a good home for my border collie, I had to move and was unable to keep our pet.
I have a 3 year old male purebred border collie that I need to find a home for. He is healthy and in good shape with no problems. I simply am not able to take care of him anymore. Would you be interested in taking him at your shelter?
We are looking at finding a good home for our Border Collie. He is about 5 or 6 years old and needs a place to run and play. He has been neutered. In our neighborhood we have been required to keep him in a small area.
Please contact me as soon as possible. My sister is going through a divorce and has to move out of her home. She has a sweet border collie. She is crate trained and needs room to run. My sister is desperate to find a good, loving family for her. She has asked me to find a rescue organization that saves border collies. We don't want her to be put down. Please help me.
Hi, my neighbor didn't want their 2 1/2 year-old German Shepard mix anymore because they were too busy. I offered to take him in instead of taking him to the animal care and control but I can't keep him in my current apartment because of the lease. He is super sweet, not food aggressive and gets along great with my cat and dogs that we have met on the street. He is neutered and I would guess he is about 40 to 45 pounds and I believe he is vaccinated although I don't know for sure.
We have a 12 year old border collie in excellent health and spirits. However, our children are now off to college and my wife and I work long hours away from the house. The result is that our border collie sits in the house all day long. Would you be able to tell me how I would find out if there are any farms that need border collies? It seems unhealthy for the dog to sit alone inside all day. Before the kids left, there was plenty of time for exercise since we live on 6 acres. But now, what would you suggest? What do other people do in similar situations?
I have owned my border collie for 5 years and she is a wonderful dog. Unfortunately, she has some social issues that we are not able to ignore anymore. She really is lovely. I wish for her to go to a home where she can be spoiled like she is here.
I have a ten year old border who is very loveable and spry, but who unfortunately is not getting the optimum exercise and attention he deserves. I live in Baltimore city and cannot afford a pet sitter or dog daycare and my work schedule does not afford me the time to get out with him. I am interested in talking about the surrender of my friend and would appreciate any information you could provide.
I am trying to find a good home for my dog. She is a 1 1/2 yr. old border collie mix. She has lot of border collie instincts. I would love to keep her. I have cows. She loves to chase them. I am having trouble training her and can't give her the attention she needs. I would love to give her to someone who would want to train her and keep her to work. I know she is smart and could be a great stock dog if her owner were smarter than me!
I am looking for a good home for my dog...He is approx. 6 years old, but due to changes in family structure, Kids getting married, going off to college there is no one home to keep up with the needs of this dog. I have to work long hours and he is alone most of the day...He has started going to the bathroom in the house and going up on kitchen counters and helping himself to anything left on the counters. I really need to place him somewhere where he has room to run and be outside...He loves kids but does not like to be alone. Please let me know of anyone who might be able to help find him a good home...
My husband and I have a 3 year old Border/Aussie mix who is WONDERFUL but we are unable to keep her due to our work schedule, and because she has a habit of jumping up or putting her paws up so that she scratches and really does some damage when she is excited, and that is something we cannot have with a baby/young child so we are looking for a new home for her. We don’t want to just give her away especially on something as risky as Craigslist and we absolutely will not put her in a shelter, so we are hoping that we can place her with a foundation where we KNOW she will find a good home. She is GREAT and there is really no other reason for us to find her a home except for that.
I have a 3 yr old male (recently neutered) Border Collie that I must find a new home for. He has become overly aggressive to the tune of neurotic whenever there is a ball being thrown or I start the engine on my ride-on mower. I have 2 other Borders with none of these issues.
I have two border collies in need of a home. They are sisters that were born on May 25, 2007. If you can assist me with any information it would be greatly appreciated. I have just had a baby and it has become an overwhelming responsibility to care for them.
My border collie is a 9 year old male. We've had him since he was a pup. Recently he started killing our chickens. He has never behaved like this before. We don't want to keep him chained. Maybe we could trade with a border collie that does not kill chickens. He is good with kids but not other dogs. He tends to be jealous. I would pay for this. If you have suggestions, please email me. Thanks so much.
My family and I rescued a BC a few yrs ago. He was 1 when we got him from a family that was giving him away. We have an acre and 2 kids. He is a sweet, sometimes timid BC. We have worked hard with him and seemed to get along well. However we cannot keep him in the yard anymore. He breaks through his underground fence to the point of getting a scab on his neck where the collar shocks him. We have trained and retrained him. He knows where the line is, but if there is a motorcycle, lawn tractor or one of his sheep (my kids!) out of the yard he runs. It has gotten too dangerous at this point; he runs into the street and last night almost knocked over an older lady who was out walking. Our neighbors are not happy and neither is the dog. Now we keep him inside much more than usual and when we do let him out it is on a leash or lead, no fun for a sweet BC.
We have a 9 year old BC/Lab mix. My husband has had her since she was a pup. Overall, she has been an amazing pet - incredibly intelligent, extremely well trained, obedient, and loyal. However, we've had some lifestyle changes in the past few years that do not allow us to dedicate a lot of time and attention to her.
We have a 10 mos old male border collie that we need to get rid of because he keeps running off and my neighbors keep calling animal control on us.
I have the most Wonderful, sweet almost 5-year old border collie mix. He is just in the wrong home. He is loyal, extremely well trained, and generally very gentle. However, we did not realize he was mostly border collie when we adopted him from the pound at 12 weeks of age, and we are just not in a position to give him the exercise and work lifestyle that he needs.
We have a 3 year old Border Collie. We have been talking about surrendering her. She needs to be at a home where she can run all day, as both my husband and I work full time. We are also gone after work with sports for my kids. She is in a crate most of the day and we don’t feel that is fair to her at all. She is a great dog, but since she is not getting that outdoor time that her breed is used too, she is just too much for us to handle. Don’t get me wrong, we take her out for walks all the time, but we cannot just let her run because we do not have a fenced in yard. And she has run away quite a few times on us. She is great with my children who are 13 and 8, but we just keep thinking it’s not fair to her to be cooped up in a house all day.
I have a 5 yr old border collie, 5yrs old. I need to have someone take and care for her and find her a good home because I am moving for a new job and the apartment complex allows only one dog. She will not do well in that environment.
My border is a chow mix, approx 1 year old, incredibly sweet and very smart!! Our work/school/life schedule has changed and we are not able to spend as much time with her as needed. I hate leaving her in her crate all day and had started leaving her out, but she has chewed all of my leather furniture and anything she can get her teeth into and dug up my yard.
I have a 4 yr old bordie collie that I need to give up. He is a good dog but my family and I don't have the time for him.
I was hoping to find out if my 1yr 1/2, black and white, neutered male border collie is a possible candidate for coming to a rescue. The problems I have with him is that he runs away and won’t stay with me when I go to work (horse farm) Also noises such as vehicles make him go crazy. I really don't have the time for dog obedience classes, and with his high instinct to herd and run I was wondering if there was any ways you or another rescue could take him and train him
I have a 1 year 9 month old female Border Collie. I have been trying to find her a new home. From reading your web site, my situation is the classic case of have a young Border Collie who has become "too much to handle". She has been neutered and has had her shots, though she is due for her annuals. Our yard isn't fenced in and as I am sure you know she really needs a place to run around in.... so she has been chained up outside and I just don't have the time she requires... I just can't seem to satiate her energy level with a full time job and four kids.
I have a border collie that needs a home. I've had her 2 months.
We currently have a rough collie that is 6 months old, neutered and crate trained. Wonderful dog that has grown up with cats and my 4 and 6 yr olds. Unfortunately, we would like him to go to a good home who can give him the attention that he needs, especially a fenced in yard.
We have a 9 month old border collie that we have to relinquish due to our work schedule. We work out of state 2 to 6 weeks at a time. So we can't be home with her. She has a lifetime license, she is litter box trained, she is up to date on shots and spayed. We need someone to take her right away.
